One block of kadam wood, one carver, forty hours.
Every sculpture begins as an uneven block — the elephant's form is found gradually, gouge by gouge, before the finer jali lattice-work is cut freehand and the piece is finished in 22k gold meenakari or hand-lacquered pigment.
Nothing here is cast or moulded. If you look closely, you'll find the small asymmetries that prove a hand, not a machine, made it.
